At 432 Park Avenue — among the most rarefied addresses on the planet — William McIntosh Design was engaged by the founder of a global real estate company to create a family apartment equal to its setting without being defined by it. The clients: a sophisticated, widely-traveled family with three children and residences on multiple continents, who required a home that was simultaneously glamorous and genuinely livable.

The solution lay in the interplay of scale, material, and restraint. The generosity of the rooms does much of the work; against that backdrop, a selection of chic, bespoke, and collectible furnishings — by Jean Royère, Paul Frankl, William Georgis, Carol Egan, Mauro Fabbro, and Achille Salvagni — provides warmth and visual incident without crowding the architecture. A sculptural brass bar with an internally illuminated onyx countertop anchors the main living area; behind it, contemporary artwork mounted on a motorized track conceals a bar cabinet, a detail that delights without announcing itself. The den — lined, intimate, and slightly apart from the more public rooms — provides the family a place of genuine withdrawal. The primary suite and its baths are finished with the same quiet luxury that characterizes the apartment throughout.

The art collection is exceptional: works by Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Hans Hofmann, Hans Hartung, Harland Miller, and RETNA are distributed through the apartment with the confidence of a private museum — each work given the wall it deserves, each room completing the other. William McIntosh Design served as art advisor throughout, working in close partnership with the clients to place each acquisition with the intelligence of a considered collection rather than a series of individual purchases.
