On a wooded property in the Hudson Valley, designed in collaboration with BarlisWedlick Architects, William McIntosh Design Creative Director Martin Raffone created an upstate retreat for an investment manager and his husband that brings the considered sophistication of urban life into dialogue with the rural landscape surrounding it. The project began with an existing collection of furnishings from the clients' Raffone-designed Manhattan loft — pieces by Gio Ponti, Christian Liaigre, Mies van der Rohe, Edward Wormley, Milo Baughman, and Neal Small — and asked how they might find new meaning in a different context.

The answer was a sophisticated interpretation of rustic materials: raw textures and natural finishes that acknowledge the landscape without sentimentalizing it, into which the clients' existing collection settles with surprising ease. The living and dining rooms open generously to the exterior; the kitchen — warm, practical, and beautifully detailed — is the quiet heart of the house. A sculptural staircase connects the floors with an economy of means that is entirely in keeping with the spirit of the whole. The primary suite, dressing room, and bath above are a composed, private world apart. The two registers — urban and rural, refined and elemental — are brought into seamless harmony, producing a retreat that feels both deeply rooted in its setting and entirely continuous with the life its owners have built elsewhere.
